The Last And Most Important Thing You Can Do

June 7, 2009

Well, this has been an exciting weekend already.  After the changes made to the Equal Rights ordinance being discussed on Tuesday, no one is satisfied.

The Anchorage Daily News has a profile of the battle that is brewing, and includes links to interviews with both Jackie Buckley of Equality Works and Jerry Prevo of Anchorage Baptist Temple.  The write up is pretty even-handed.  I would recommend taking a look at it, as well as the two interviews linked above,  so that you can have a good idea as to what arguments both sides will likely be employing on Tuesday.

However, I would like to draw your attention to the Comments Section after these articles.  Here is some of the sentiment being expressed already:

In the bible these people are going against Jesus…they need their own planet to live on….so sick of hearing of their right, the rights were made for a man and a women…live with it or go to hell where you will end up anyway!

Ahh…brotherly love.  This kind of venom may seem harmless, as it dwells in the Comment Section, but while, largely, comments go unnoticed by newspaper editors and online readers, it is actually specifically what elected representatives target to attain the view of their constituents. And when malicious comments like this escape scrutiny and are left unchallenged, they do so in the eyes of the very people who we count on to represent the right and just choices in these c0ntested ballots. Taking the time to register on these sites may seem like an unnecessary five minutes better spent elsewhere, but it is simply not the case.

Please, we challenge you to take our argument to the comments sections of our local newspapers, in the few days left before the vote. We need to speak our minds and reinforce the the resolve of those assembly members who are strengthened by their belief that they are doing whats rights, but may be limited in support of their constituents. Remember, it is we the people who, in the end, make them do it. And this is the front line.

The Anchorage Daily News requires a little upfront information before you can leave comments, so just click here to register and then speak your mind!
